Traveling opens the door to new adventures and unforgettable experiences. However, preparing for your trip can often feel stressful and chaotic. Having a go-to "Before Travel To Do List" can turn your hectic lead-up into a well-organized process. For those that know me well, know that organized is my preferred way! This guide contains practical steps to help you manage your pre-travel tasks effectively so you can focus on what truly matters...Living Like Every Day is Friday!
Start With Travel Documents
Make sure your travel documents are ready well in advance. This includes your passport, global entry, Real ID (if needed), visas, travel insurance, and any necessary medical documents.
Check Expiry Dates: It’s important to verify the expiration dates on your passport. Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your date of entry. If you need to renew, start the process as early as possible to avoid last-minute stress. And if you don't have a passport, be sure to apply for one 4 to 6 months in advance of your planned trip. This will allow you to book your flights with your passport info.
Create Digital Backups: Take photos or scan your important documents and store them securely online or on your smartphone. If your documents are lost or stolen, having these backups can save you a lot of hassle. This has truly come in handy for me!
Book Your Accommodations
Once your travel documents are in order, focus on booking your accommodations. This is a critical step in your planning, especially for popular destinations where hotels can fill up quickly. It's also helpful to consider such things as dry season, holiday observances, and popular times as the weather, closed businesses, and large crowds can impact your trip.
Research Options: Use online resources to find accommodations that meet your budget and preferences. Pay attention to ratings and reviews. Around 70% of travelers consult online reviews before booking to ensure they choose the best place for their needs. When I'm booking my own trip, I typically use Orbitz, Cheap Carribean, and Expedia. Utilizing a travel agent is also a good option to save time. Be sure to check out Travel Jones if you need an experienced agent.
Keep Booking Records: Write down confirmation numbers and check-in times, and keep the address handy, including transportation details from the airport. Digital tools, such as note-taking apps or via email, can make this even easier.
Arrange Transportation
Next, think about how you will get to and from the airport, as well as how you will move around at your destination.
Options to Consider:
Renting a Car: Convenient for exploring, but remember to book in advance, especially during peak travel months when availability is lower. Be sure to consider how much luggage space you will need in the car as well.
Public Transportation: Familiarize yourself with local transport options and download relevant apps for offline access. For instance, cities like London offer Oyster cards that can save you up to 30% on fares compared to cash payments.
Pack Strategically
Packing can be a source of stress if not organized. Create a packing list so you don’t forget essentials like chargers, toiletries, and travel pillows.
Tailor Your Packing: Consider the weather and activities of your destination. If you’re heading to a tropical location, you may want lightweight clothes, while winter trips will need warmer attire. I fold my clothes flat and pack in the days order so I don't have to waste time figuring out what to wear...it's so easy just to pull out the next outfit and not think about it!
Check Baggage Policies: Airlines often have strict baggage limits. For example, budget airlines may only allow carry-on luggage for as low as $30. Check the specific rules to avoid unexpected fees. Be sure to weigh your suitcases before arriving at the airport. It's also good to consider what you may be bringing back from the trip to ensure you have enough room in your suitcases and don't exceed weight limits coming back.

Prepare Your Home
Before you depart, ensure your home is secure and ready for your time away.
Key Steps:
Securing Your Home: Lock all windows and doors and consider investing in timers for your lights so it looks like someone is home. Camera doorbells are convenient too so you can check on your home while away. Also adjust your thermoset as needed...a heating/cooling schedule that adjusts automatically is always helpful!
Mail and Deliveries: Pause any subscriptions or deliveries to avoid cluttering your doorstep. For longer trips, consider asking a neighbor or family member to collect your mail.
Taking these precautions gives you peace of mind, allowing you to relax and enjoy your trip.
Stay Connected
Staying connected during your travels is easier now than ever. Plan ahead to ensure you have access to communication tools and information.
Communication Options:
International Phone Plans: Check with your carrier for plans that suit your needs while abroad.
Local SIM Cards: Often a cost-effective option for staying connected.
Download Essential Apps: Before you travel, download navigation and communication apps to streamline your experience. Familiarize yourself with these tools to reduce stress when you arrive at your destination.
Share Your Itinerary: Inform family or friends about your travel plans. Share your itinerary with someone back home so they can reach you if needed or in case of an emergency.
Final Check
As your departure date nears, go through your checklist one last time. Confirm that all tasks are completed and review your packing list.
Last-Minute Review: Double-check flight timings, transport arrangements, and ensure your ID and documents are in an easily accessible spot.
