This Flower Was Waiting To Be Seen On Our Hike!

One of the reasons why I love my home state of Michigan so much is that it offers a wide range of things to do. From wine country in the summer to skiing in the winter...the possibilities are endless! Even as an adult I'm unraveling more gems in the state of Michigan. A few years ago, I came across a unique winter activity...luging at Muskegon Luge Sports Adventure Park. It's one of 4 tracks of its kind in the U.S! This post will share some highlights of my weekend getaway to Muskegon Luge Sports Adventure Park. Buckle up...this was some ride!

Training Is Complete - Ready To Ride!

Getting To Muskegon Luge:

From the Metro-Detroit area, Muskegon, Michigan is about a 3-to-3.5-hour drive making it feasible for a weekend getaway. Like most winter related activities, the weather will be your main concern before even arriving at the adventure park. If there isn't enough snowfall at the park, the luge track won't be open. There is extensive preparation to ensure the track is rideable. Tickets should also be purchased well in advance because there are limited spots for the season.

Tip #1: If the luge track isn't rideable, you will be notified 48 hours in advance of your reservation, so it helps to be flexible with your plans. Click here to purchase your tickets directly through Muskegon Luge Sports Adventure Park's website. The tickets range from $65 or $75 per person depending on the weekend and includes instruction, equipment, and luge time.

Where I Stayed:

Hotel Bed

The adventure park is located in a wooded area, so I opted to stay in a hotel in the city-side. Shoreline Inn & Conference Center has a unique location upon the waterfront and is about 15 minutes from Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park. Although the hotel isn't new, the accommodations were comfortable and spacious. The room options are perfect for singles, couples, families, and groups. There are two restaurants, an indoor swimming pool with two hot tubs, an outdoor swimming pool (seasonal), a conference center, and a 24-hour fitness center.

Tip #2: If you want to experience the onsite waterfront restaurant, The Lake House, be sure to make a reservation prior to your arrival. Pick-up orders can also be placed to enjoy in your room. Click here to check out the menu or make a reservation.

Tip #3: If the hotel is crowded during your stay, be sure to allow for ample time to check-out. There is only one main elevator and several floors. The luggage carts are limited as well.

Must-try List:

#1 - Luge Like an Olympian!

BLOCK HOUSE HILL MUSKEGON PARK
Block House Hill...I Needed to Rest!

If you are adventurous or love winter sports, I'd recommend making the luge your main activity. You will need to allow yourself 2 to 3 hours in the morning or evening to participate in the training, practice, competition, and awards ceremony. The top 3 men and top 3 women with the fastest speeds are awarded with a keepsake medal! Dress appropriately for hours out in the cold and be comfortable with going down the track at high speeds...up to 30mph to be exact!

#2 - Ice skate through the Forest

Ever ice-skate through the forest at night? The adventure park has an ice-skating trail in the forest with beautiful lights for a festive feel. The one-of-a -kind trail is 1/4 mile. Bring your own skates or get a rental!

#3 - Snowshoe on the Sand Dunes

If you are a hiker or want to try something new, be sure to try your hand at one of the Snowshoe trails through Muskegon State Park. The Lost Lake Dune Trail, the most difficult, which we opted for is a 5k hike (just over 3 miles). The adventure is filled with views of the landmark Block House, top views from the Lake Michigan Sand Dunes, and views of Muskegon Lake. This is probably a beautiful hike in the warmer months as well!

Tip #4: Consider taking a light backpack with you so you can carry some water, light snacks, sunglasses, and hand/feet warmers as needed. My Earth Pak would've come in handy for this hike!

#4 - Cozy Up by the Bonfire!

After your day adventure, get cozy with some hot cocoa or roast some smores by the bonfire. There are plenty of areas to hang-out and get warm. Make it a great end to your day with recaps of the fun in the park and storytelling!

Last Thought: A Nice Winter Getaway or a Once in a Lifetime Adventure Mackinaw Island Getaway

Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park is a hidden Michigan gem for all lovers of winter sports and activities.

With activities to accommodate all skill levels and interests, you can make your visit full of an adrenaline rush and new challenges or enjoy more leisurely activities. The adventure park also offers hockey, cross country skiing, and a sledding hill for the winter. On a special note, the sports park is run by the Muskegon Sports Council, which is a non-profit organization. Its overall mission is to promote a healthy lifestyle through sports and expose the local youth to different activities. This effort is apparent with the popularity of its Youth Luge League and accommodations for universal accessibility. Be sure to check-out their website directly to explore all of its summer activity offerings as well (click here). I plan to make another trip there during the warmers months to test my skills on the wheel luge! Cheers to a warm and cozy Friday...wherever you are!
