Costa Rican Casado Review

Updated: Jun 1, 2023

On a tour to Rio Celeste & a local Sloth Farm, I got the opportunity to try Costa Rica's national dish, Casado, for lunch. Our tour guide mentioned that The Costa Rican Casado is a very popular dish in the country and it's name is derived from the Spanish term married. Married indeed!...as this meal offered a variety of favorite Costa Rican dishes including, rice, black beans, cheese, tilapia (or another popular meat of your choosing), pasta salad, garden salad, and plantains. The meal was delicious and plentiful. Most of the people at our table couldn't finish it all! I'm not a big fan of plantains, but these were the best that I've ever had! Although I've never had plantains with the skin on, it must've made the difference for me. The tilapia was lightly fried and is a main fish option in Costa Rica. I felt quite at home with this meal!

Recommendation: A must try if you travel to Costa Rica!

Fun Fact: Many male locals are distinguished by their lunches. The married men bring The Costa Rican Casado for lunch, while the single men typically bring rice and a meat. I'm guessing the wives ensure their husbands have a big hearty meal!

My first Costa Rican Casado lunch - Delicioso!
